Par-take-ing-ness

Posted on November 23rd, 2007 in by ChrisLim

Today is Black Friday, I dread going out to the stores on this day of merriment, crowds, completely full parking lots, idiot drivers, and most of all the need to pick out a few great bargains while standing in a line so unbefitting-the-savings long.

Unfortunately, the company who’s replacing our old water heater in the other house called with an opening and made us leave our warm abode to let them in.

Our choice wait there with him in the empty house for one and a half hours or go shopping. Shopping it was.

To my utmost surprise, the Kohl’s department store was (wo)manned by 12 cashiers each with another person to bag the purchases. We were about the 5oth person in line and was out within 10 minutes. I’m in awe of their thoughtfulness. They’ve definitely earned our loyalty. Not to mention thank for the $20 they gave use to shop another day.

BTW, there were still crazy drivers, filled up lots and way too many people. Who would have thunk that that many people actually live around here…

The Everly Brothers to Johnny Hates Jazz

Posted on November 22nd, 2007 in by ChrisLim

When I think back to the family vacations 3 decades ago, I recall the music from the 8-track the most. We listened to it so much that we knew which exact song was going to play next. It went from Everly Brothers, Elvis, to something about “smokin guns” to “Johnny Cool..” to Abba’s Dancing Queen. Yes, piracy was big in Malaysia back then too. It was “authentic” looking, 4 color press printed glossy song listing and a professionally created shell casing.

To this day, I believe I know the lyrics to every Everly Brothers song there was. I also sometime expect Puttin’ on the Ritz will always play after Georgy Girl.

The new 8-track for our generation is my iPod with the Belkin FM transmitter. My 4 year old will learn the lyrics to my favorite songs from Johnny Hates Jazz’ Shattered Dreams, Terence Trent D’arby’s Wishing Well, every crooning ballad of Spandau Ballets, and every song of Abba. My wish is that when the kid has kids of her own in her flying car playing her super-hi-fi telepathic broadcaster, one of the songs will be Fernando.

Physics

Physics was one of my most favorite subjects in school. I managed to locate my high school physics teacher for the upcoming 20th reunion.

Yesterday, I was happy that the physics I learned in school and at the local Snooker hall was not forgotten. I’ve played pool maybe once or twice in the past and don’t really know the rules. I know for instance that if someone sinks the striped that’s theirs for the whole round, and sinking the black before its time is death.

It was very fun to pot the balls in pool as they’re bigger and the pockets are enormous. Somehow, I don’t think the bunch we went with last night believed that I didn’t play pool.

In the end, I introduced the game of Snooker to them. I was interesting how much gentler they stroked the cue, know that if they foul, they lose points.

I might like to join a pool league, but the smoke in the establishment might suck a bit.

HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray

It’s funny that we’re back to the early 80’s with Sony vs the world media war again.

I’ve always stated that I’ll only buy when the players are combined.

Eating my own words last Friday, when Walmart made me “an offa’ I can’ta refuse” at a microscopic $98 for the HD DVD player, I’m waiting for the Tat for the Tit that Toshiba offered by Sony.

Sony, can you please sell the player for $149? I’ll buy it at that price. Better Yet, how bout selling the PS3 for $250? I really really want to play Jak III but you’re sneaky and only made it for the PS3.

Oh BTW. I looked for some DVD’s on eBay and I see this

Format
DVD (27)
HD-DVD (1650)
Blu-ray (92)

Interesting Huh?

Curses, Foiled again

Posted on November 7th, 2007 in by ChrisLim

Bitten in the butt was a regular happening this week.

The first involved trying to be thoughtful and ordering a bigger paper tray for a new laser printer and the second involved a wide angle lens for my Nikon P5000.

The first issue was quite serious. A height issue with the total combined unit. Total height 39 inches. Additional 18″ base to make it normal height $350.  Travis and I spent at least 15 minutes contemplating various solution, bought and made, wood and metal to no avail.

It now will stand at its stubby height. Well at least we don’t have to lift our arms to get our printouts…

Second bite was the new fancy wide angle lense. It was sweet! I took 50 with and without pictures. I loved it until tonight. My new Heroes HD DVD came in and I decided to mark this special occasion with a photo. The flash popped and there was a weird crescent shadow in the picture.

“Stupid me!” I thought “Thumb was in the way” as I did hold the lens while snapping the pic.

One handed, I clicked again. To my utter shock, it did it again.  “Bulb shot?” as I faced the camera.

One look and I knew the problem… The wide angle lens is now so wide its blocking the flash…

Lets see… eBay… P5000 … flash attachment…
