The Everly Brothers to Johnny Hates Jazz
When I think back to the family vacations 3 decades ago, I recall the music from the 8-track the most. We listened to it so much that we knew which exact song was going to play next. It went from Everly Brothers, Elvis, to something about “smokin guns” to “Johnny Cool..” to Abba’s Dancing Queen. Yes, piracy was big in Malaysia back then too. It was “authentic” looking, 4 color press printed glossy song listing and a professionally created shell casing.
To this day, I believe I know the lyrics to every Everly Brothers song there was. I also sometime expect Puttin’ on the Ritz will always play after Georgy Girl.
The new 8-track for our generation is my iPod with the Belkin FM transmitter. My 4 year old will learn the lyrics to my favorite songs from Johnny Hates Jazz’ Shattered Dreams, Terence Trent D’arby’s Wishing Well, every crooning ballad of Spandau Ballets, and every song of Abba. My wish is that when the kid has kids of her own in her flying car playing her super-hi-fi telepathic broadcaster, one of the songs will be Fernando.
